Face Mask Acne

Introducing: Mask Acne

As if we didn’t need another acne type, we now have what has been termed “Maskne” (Mask Acne). It’s a new type of acne that negatively impacts people across the nation due to face coverings.

With most, if not all, businesses and establishments requiring face coverings, it’s rare to see people in public places without them. Individuals are noticing the effects of wearing face masks daily.

So what is mask acne? And why are face masks causing acne?

Mask acne is a skin condition that happens due to the prolonged use of facial masks or other protective coverings.

“Masks impose heat, friction, and occlusion on the skin, and when combined with a moist environment from breathing, talking or sweating, this is a recipe for breakouts,” notes dermatologist Harry Dao of Loma Linda University Health. Facial pores can then get clogged, and that’s when the acne comes out to give you an unwelcome hello. Other effects from prolonged face mask usage include dryness of the skin, itchiness, and facial flares like Rosacea.

On top of the effects that mask acne are creating from prolonged daily use, many people continue to reuse the same face masks for several days or more without washing them! This creates a breeding ground for bacteria.

How can face mask acne be stopped?

  1. Wash Your Masks Daily: To reduce the effects of mask acne, we recommend that if you have reusable face masks that you wash them at least daily to prevent your face mask from being a bacteria breeding ground
  2. Use Gentle Soaps: When washing your face mask, try to use non-fragrance gentle soaps as some fragrances can irritate your skin and promote breakouts
  3. Go Makeupless from the Nose Down: Wearing a face mask with makeup can cause pores to clog up even more than they would if you were wearing your face mask without makeup. Makeup also leaves a residue on your mask, which we know encourages bacteria growth if reused without washing. Ditching makeup from the nose down will not only allow your pores to breathe more, but if your concern is that you don’t want others to see your face “naked,” it’s very likely that no-one will get to see it since you’ll be wearing your face-covering anyway.
